There are multiple ways you can limit access within an iPad or iPhone. Guided Access and Screen Time are two examples.
Guided Access
- Instructions to setup (from Apple): https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202612
- What is it?
- A way to keep a user into one app (e.g., TouchChat)
- Why is it used?
- For AAC users who may be distracted by other features in the iPad (e.g., YouTube, games) may benefit from this feature while they focus exclusively on communication with their AAC app.
Screen Time (Content & Privacy Restrictions)
- Instructions to setup (from Apple): https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208982
- What is it?
- Content & Privacy Restrictions provides a way to block or limit the user from accessing certain iDevice features, such as the App Store, the Apple ID, etc.
- Why is it used?
- Guided Access may be too limiting for some AAC users, as it restricts access to only one app. Adding Content & Privacy Restrictions may provide more flexibility without making everything available. It is considered a type of parental control.
- Some examples:
- Deleting apps: Prevent someone from accidentally deleting any apps on the device. Find it under Screen Time - Content & Privacy Restrictions - iTunes & App Store Purchases - Deleting apps.
- Changing account information: Prevent someone from changing any accounts on the device. Find it under Screen Time - Content & Privacy Restrictions - Account Changes (under 'Allow Changes').
